In the vast and seemingly endless expanding worlds of nerd culture, we had a clear vision when we re-established our nerd culture hub. We wanted to have our baseline of having an outlet to talk about all things nerdy in our written articles, but that just isn’t enough for us anymore. When we were drafting up ideas for The Pixel Parlor, we knew we wanted to not only send our written thoughts out into the universe, we wanted to actually make original things that we talk about on a weekly basis. Thus came the idea of making a video game development wing of our nerdy culture website, further pushing us to officially declare ourselves a company in the near future.
Why Gameboy Games?
A simple question with a simple answer. We at the Pixel Parlor have a deep love and appreciation for retro gaming, and there’s simply nothing better and more retro than the legendary Nintendo Gameboy. Who doesn’t remember the glory days of riding home in the back seat trying to see what was on screen when the street lights passed by? It’s not only extremely nostalgic for all of us, but it’s a great way to breathe life back into a console that shaped gaming into what it is today.
On top of the love we have for the handheld console, it’s also waaaayyyyyy easier to develop games for it. There’s also a very niche market for things like this that makes the value and appreciation for the time we spend much more worth it compared to any other platform for indie gaming. I mean, just look at the literal endless pages of indie games on Steam. Do they get the love and appreciation they deserve? Absolutely not. But for something like a new Gameboy game? That’s what retro gamers are after. There’s nothing better than taking on a new adventure on a console thought to have seen its last ride, and that’s our main thought behind it. We want to bring the Nintendo Gameboy, along with its sister variants the GBC and GBA, back to the top of the totem pole.
Our first game, The Night Is Long, is simply our first steps into the world of retro game producing, and with the ideas we have coming down the line, there are many more games ahead. Myself and the other owner of the Pixel Parlor are actually fiction authors, with several novel releases under our belts, so this not only fulfills our love of gaming, but it gives us an additional outlet of telling amazing stories. With this first game being seen as a test of our capabilities to produce quality games for the Gameboy, all future games can be expected to be narrative driven adventures giving players a deep satisfaction from beginning to end.
Thank you everyone for following along so far, and we can’t WAIT to show you what we have in store for next year. As always, for all the latest and greatest in nerd culture, keep it right here with your pals at the Pixel Parlor!
